Shriners International, a fraternity based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth, founded in New York City in September 1872.

Today there are nearly 200 temples (chapters) in several countries and thousands of clubs around the world. In 1922 Shriners Hospital for Children was founded as our official philanthropy and what began as one hospital is now a world-renowned health care system with locations in three countries. An amazing accomplishment and one that all Shriners today are working hard to maintain.
The Fez
Why do we wear Fez hats?

Shriners evolved out of the Masonic Order which is steeped in symbolism, ceremony and ritual, so one of first task in starting Shriners was to draft the ritual, design the emblem, formulate a salutation and declare that all that all members wear the red fez.
Inspired by an Arabian theme the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine came into being.
Today the Fez is one of the most recognizable symbols of Shriners International and is worn proudly by members.
